2021년 제1회 힌츠페터 국제보도상 조직위원회(공동위원장 정동년 5·18기념재단 이사장, 한원상 전 한국영상기자협회장)는 9월 1일 오후 2시 5·18기념재단에서 2021년 제1회 힌츠페터 국제보도상 수상작 발표 기자회견을 진행했다.
심사위원회는 생명과 안전에 위협을 받는 상황에서도 독재 권력의 불법 선거를 고발하고 벨라루스의 선거 과정을 모두 취재하고 보도한 미하일 아르신스키 영상 기자, 미얀마 군부가 자행한 잔혹한 폭력행위를 국제사회에 고발한 노만과 콜린 영상 기자, 미국으로 이동하기 위해 전 세계에서 몰려든 이주자들의 험난하고 위험한 여정을 함께하며 영상으로 담은 브루노 페데레코 영상 기자, 1980년 5월 19일 광주 금남로에 투입된 계엄군을 처음으로 취재하고 보도한 故 유영길 영상 기자의 고민과 열정을 수상 이유로 밝혔다.
심사위원회는 오늘 힌츠페터 국제보도상의 수상작 결정이 위르겐 힌츠페터 기자의 정신을 기리고, 전 세계 민주화를 갈망하는 사람들의 모습을 담는 영상 기자들과의 협력과 연대를 공고히 해줄 것으로 기대한다고 밝혔다.
제1회 힌츠페터 국제보도상 시상식은 10월 27일 진행될 예정이며, 부문별 수상자에게 상금 1만 달러와 트로피를 수여한다.

제1회 힌츠페터국제보도상 심사위원회는 경쟁부문의 대상인 ‘기로에 선 세계상’ 수상자에 벨라루스(Belarus) 영상기자 미하일 아르신스키(Mikhail Arshynski), 뉴스부문 수상자에 미얀마 영상기자 노만(Norman, 가명)과, 콜린(Collin, 가명), 특집부문 수상자에 이탈리아 출신 영상기자 브루노 페데리코(Bruno Federico), 비경쟁부문 공로상인 ‘오월광주상’의 수상자에 前 미국CBS 서울지국의 영상기자 故 유영길 영상 기자를 선정했다.
‘미하일 아르신스키(Mikhail Arshynski)’는 폴란드에 기반을 두고 벨라루스를 시청권역으로 하는 벨셋(Belsat) 위성방송에서 2009년부터 영상 기자로 활동해 왔다. 그는 2020년 벨라루스 대선에서 26년간 재임한 알렉산드르 루카센코 정권의 불공정 선거를 막고, 공정한 투표를 위해 독재에 맞서 싸우는 벨라루스 사람들의 이야기를 담은 보도 다큐멘터리 <“Don’t be afraid”>를 제작해 2021년 5월 방송했다.
‘미하일 아르신스키(Mikhail Arshynski)’는 대선 운동 기간 중, 벨라루스 대선에 뛰어든 야당 후보들의 선거 캠페인을 따라다니며, 루카센코 정권이 벌이는 야당 후보들에 대한 탄압과 선거운동 방해, 벨라루스 시민들의 민주 정부 탄생을 열망하는 집회와 활동들을 취재했다. 그는 벨라루스 대선 취재 과정에서 대중집회를 촬영, 방송하려다 경찰에 체포되어 법원으로부터 10일간의 구금판결을 받고 구금되기도 했다.
심사위원들은 생명과 안전에 위협을 받는 상황에서도 벨라루스의 민주적 선거와 사회 민주화를 위해 전 선거 과정을 취재, 보도한 미하일 아르신스키의 영상기자로서의 활동을 높이 평가했다. 그리고, 위험을 무릅쓰고 독재 권력의 불법 선거를 고발한 그의 고민과 노력이 힌츠페터 기자가 광주의 참상을 알리고 한국의 민주화를 위해 오랜 기간 취재, 보도해 온 정신과 맞닿아 있기에 ‘기로에 선 세계상’의 수상자로 선정한다고 의견을 모았다.
뉴스부문 수상자인 노만(Norman, 가명)과 콜린(Collin, 가명)은 싱가포르의 영어 뉴스 채널 CNA(Channel NewsAsia) 소속 양곤지국의 영상기자들이다. 이들은 올 2월 27일, 미얀마 양곤에서 개최된 군부 쿠데타에 반대하는 대규모 시위 도중, 시민들에게 무차별적인 최루탄 발사, 구타와 연행 작전을 벌이는 장면을 취재해 <미얀마군, 강제진압 강화 (Myanmar army steps up enforcement level)>라는 제목으로 당일 전 세계에 보도했다.
두 기자가 취재한 영상은 미얀마 군부가 벌이는 시민들에 대한 잔혹한 탄압과 폭력행위를 국제사회에 고발하고 있다. 동시에, 민주헌정질서 회복을 열망하는 미얀마 시민들의 목숨을 건 저항, 군부의 혹독한 언론통제와 탄압에 굴하지 않고, 역사의 현장을 기록하고 알리려는 미얀마 언론인들의 기자정신과 헌신을 생생하게 보여주고 있다. 심사위원들은 이번 수상자 선정이 두 기자의 용감한 취재에 대한 격려이기도 하지만, 군부독재에 맞서 민주주의 회복을 위해 투쟁하고 있는 미얀마 시민들에게 세계 시민들이 보내는 연대와 지지, 응원과 격려를 담고 있다고 밝혔다.
특집(Feateurs)부문의 첫 수상자로 선정된 브루노 페데레코(Bruno Federico)는 이탈리아 출신으로 미국 PBS, 호주 ABC방송에서 프리랜서 영상 기자로 일해 왔고, 2021 피버디상(2021 Peabody Award), 2021 국가 헤드라이너상(National Headliner Award), 2017 미국 해외 언론 협회 로버트 스피어스 벤자민상(Overseas Press Club of America 2017, Robert Spiers Benjamin Award) 최우수상을 수상했다.
브루노 페데리코 기자는 남중미의 콜롬비아와 북중미의 파나마를 잇는 험난한 협곡지대인 다리엔갭(Darien Gap)를 거쳐 미국으로 이동하려고 전 세계에서 몰려든 이주자들의 험난하고 위험한 여정을 카메라에 담았다. 그의 취재 영상은 2020년 8월 12일 미국의 공영방송 PBS의 시간에 <필사적인 여정: Desperate Journey>이라는 아이템으로 보도했다.
브루노 페데리코 기자는 이 영상를 통해, 왜 이주민들과 망명자들이 자신들의 고향을 떠나서 험난한 여정에 나서는지, 그리고 안전하고 더 나은 미국이라는 땅에 도달하기 위해 어떤 위험과 고통을 감내하고 있는지를 보여주고 있다. 또, 이들이 기존의 안정된 사회를 위협하고, 공격적이라는 기존의 편견들을 뒤집는 우리와 똑같이 삶의 희망을 추구하는 모습을 보여주려 노력하고 있다. 심사위원들은 영상 보도의 의미는 물론이고, 취재원들의 위험하고 험난한 여정을 무거운 카메라와 장비들을 갖고 함께 이동하며 생생하면서도 높은 영상미로 표현해낸 브루노 페데리코 기자의 영상 기자로서의 열정과 실력을 높이 평가해 수상자로 선정한다고 밝혔다.
비경쟁부문 공로상인 ‘오월광주상(MayGwangju Award)의 유영길 전 美CBS 서울지국 영상 기자는 1980년 5월19일 광주 금남로에 계엄군이 투입된 상황을 영상 기자로는 처음으로 취재해, 5·18 광주민주화운동을 최초로 TV 뉴스에 알린 공로를 인정받아 수상자로 선정되었다. 심사위원회는 고인이 된 유영길 영상기자의 유족, 지인에 대한 인터뷰, 1980년 5월 19일 광주 동구청 상황일지와 미국 CBS-TV의 뉴스, 5·18 당시 외신의 보도와 국내외 학술 자료를 조사, 검증했다. 이를 통해, 유영길 기자가 5·18을 최초로 취재, 보도한 영상기자이고, 유 기자가 컬러로 기록한 1980년 5월 19일, 광주 금남로의 상황이 5·18 진상규명 작업과 광주민주화운동을 기억하는데, 중요한 역사자료로서의 가치가 있다는 점을 높이 평가했다. 심사위원회는 故 유영길 기자에 대한 오월광주상 수상을 시작으로 5·18 당시 다양한 언론의 취재기록과 언론인들의 증언을 재조명하고, 체계화 해가는 시작점이 되기를 바란다는 의견을 모았다.
힌츠페터 국제보도상 조직위원회와 심사위원회는 이번 공모와 수상작 선정이 전 세계 곳곳에서 민주주의, 인권, 평화, 언론자유의 진전을 위해 노력하는 시민들과 영상 기자를 포함한 언론인들에 대한 강력한 지지, 연대의 표현이자 커다란 격려와 응원이 되기를 기원한다.

Announcement of the Winner of the 1st Hinzpeter Awards
The Selection Committee for the 1st Hinzpeter Awards have chosen Belarusian video journalist Mikhail Arshynski for the World at a Crossroads Award, which is in the competition categories. In addition, two video journalists from Myanmar, Norman(The name withheld by request) and Collin(The name withheld by request) were chosen as winners of the Award for News. Video journalist Bruno Federico from Italy will receive the Award for Features, and for the May Gwangju Award, which is based on non-competitive selection, Young-gil Yu, the late former video journalist of the CBS(USA) Seoul bureau, was selected as the recipient.
Mikhail Arshynski has been working since 2009 as a video journalist for Belsat, a satellite service based in Poland but accessible in Belarus. He produced the documentary “Don’t be Afraid,” about the Belarusians fighting the dictatorship for fair elections and preventing fraudulent elections in 2020 under the Alexander Lukashenko regime. This documentary aired in May 2021.
During the presidential election campaign, Arshynski followed the candidates from the opposition parties. He covered the Lukashenko regime’s suppression of opposition candidates and obstruction of the election campaign, as well as the protests and activities that Belarusians carried out as they aspired to have a democratic government. Arshynski was arrested by the police while trying to film and broadcast a public protest related to the presidential election. The court sentenced him to 10 days under custody.
The members of the Hinzpeter jury greatly appreciated Arshynski’s activities as a video journalist who has covered and reported on the entire election process for the democratization of Belarusian society. He has done so even as his life and safety have been threathened. His concerns and efforts for democratization, his willingness to risk his own life, and the accusations that the dictatorship rigged the election, are in line with the spirit of Hinzpeter in informing the world about the plight of Gwangju during the democratization in Korea. Thus, the jury members agreed that he deserves to receive the award.
Norman and Collin, the winners of the Award for News, are video journalists from the Yangon bureau of the Singapore-based English news channel CNA (Channel News Asia). On February 27 of this year, during a large-scale demonstration against the military coup in Yangon, Myanmar, they covered the violence of the police indiscriminately firing tear gas and beating and detaining citizens in a video “Myanmar Army Steps Up Enforcement Level”, which was aired around the world on that day.
The video exposes the Myanmar military’s brutal oppression and violence against the citizens to the international community. At the same time, it vividly shows the brave spirit and dedication of the journalists who are willing to film the truth of history and the resistance of the people of Myanmar, who aspire to democracy and the recovery of constitutional order, while not surrendering to threats against their lives. The Selection Committee said that the selection of the winners is not only encouragement to the two journalists for their courageous coverage; it also contains a message of solidarity and support from citizens around the world to Myanmar, where people are fighting for the restoration of democracy against the military dictatorship.
For the Award for Features, the first winner is Bruno Federico from Italy, who has worked as a freelance videographer for PBS in the US and ABC in Australia. He received the 2021 Peabody Award and the 2021 National Headliner Award. He also won the first prize of the Overseas Press Club of America in 2017 and the Robert Spiers Benjamin Award.
Federico captured the arduous and dangerous journey of migrants to reach the United States through Darien Gap, a rugged canyon that connects Colombia in South and Central America and Panama in North and Central America. His video coverage was reported on August 12, 2020 through the US public broadcasting station PBS and its program “PBS News Hour” with the title “Desperate Journey”.
In this video report, Bruno Federico explains why migrants and asylum seekers leave their home countries and embark on such a difficult journey, and the risks and pains they endure to reach a safer and better place, America. In addition, we hope to show that they are the same people as us and have the same hopes for life, challenging the existing prejudice that threatens them and that is aggressive to a stable society. The jury decided to award the prize to Federico not only for the meaning of the video report, but also for the passion and skill that he shows. He has provided vivid, high-quality visuals while traveling with heavy cameras and equipment on such a dangerous and difficult journey.
Young-gil Yu, the late video journalist at the Seoul branch of CBS, has won the May Gwangju Award, which is a non-competitive prize. Yu was the first video journalist who reported on martial law forces being deployed on Geumnam Street, Gwangju, on May 19, 1980. He also contributed to the May 18 Democratic Uprising by covering it for the first time through television news. The selection committee investigated and verified materials such as an interview with the family and acquaintances of Yu, the situation log of the Gwangju Dong-gu Office on May 19, 1980, news from CBS, foreign media reports at the time of May 18, and domestic and foreign academic documents. Through this process, the selection committee established that Young-gil Yu was the first video journalist who covered and reported on May 18 and the situation on Geumnam Street, Gwangju, on May 19, 1980. He recorded all these events in color. Thus, the selection committee appraised these visual records as important historical material for remembering May 18, particularly in its truth-finding process. Starting with the May Gwangju Award, while selecting Younggil Yu as the first recipient, the selection committee stated that it hopes to be a beginning point for systematizing and re-illuminating the reports and testimonies of journalists related to the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
The organizing and selection committees for The Hinzpeter Awards said that this competition and the selection of winners are expressions of solidarity and strong support for journalists, including citizens and videographers, who are working for the advancement of democracy, human rights, peace, and press freedom around the world. They added that they hope this will be a great encouragement and support for journalists.

이 작품은 국민을 상대로 미얀마 군부가 자행한 잔혹한 탄압과 폭력행위를 국제사회에 고발했다. 또 민주헌정질서 회복을 열망하는 미얀마 국민의 목숨을 건 저항을 잘 다뤘다. 아울러 군부의 혹독한 언론통제와 탄압에 굴하지 않고, 역사의 현장을 기록하고 알리는 미얀마 언론인의 기자정신과 헌신의 노력을 생생하게 보여주고 있다. 심사위원들은 이번 수상자 선정이 두 기자의 용감한 취재에 대한 격려이기도 하지만, 군부독재에 맞서 민주주의 회복을 위해 투쟁하고 있는 미얀마 국민에게 세계인이 보내는 연대와 지지, 응원과 격려의 메시지를 담고 있다고 밝혔다. 이 기자들은 싱가포르에 기반을 둔 영어 뉴스 채널 CNA(Channel NewsAsia) 소속의 양곤지국 영상기자들이다. 이들은 올해 2월 27일 미얀마 양곤에서 군부 쿠데타에 반대하는 대규모시위를 취재했다. 이 과정에서 군부가 시민에게 무차별적인 최루탄 발사, 구타와 연행 작전을 벌이는 장면을 취재해 <미얀마군, 강제진압 수위 강화 (Myanmar army steps up enforcement level)>라는 제목으로 당일 보도함으로써 미얀마 사태를 전 세계에 알렸다.
▲특집부문(Features)을 수상한 <필사적인 여정: (Desperate Journey)>은 이탈리아 출신의 브루노 페데리코(Bruno Federico) 영상기자가 취재한 작품이다.
이 작품은 이주민과 망명자가 왜 자신들의 고향을 떠나서 험난한 여정에 나서는지, 그리고 안전하고 더 나은 땅이라고 믿는 미국에 도달하기 위해 어떤 위험과 고통을 감내하고 있는지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 이 작품은 이주민과 망명자가 사회에 위협적이고 공격적인 이들이 아니라, 여느 일반인과 마찬가지로 안전과 행복을 향한 희망을 갖고 있다는 사실을 보여주려 노력했다. 심사위원들은 영상보도 자체의 의미는 물론이고, 브루노 페데리코 영상기자의 열정을 특히 높이 평가했다. 무거운 카메라 장비를 지닌 채 목숨을 건 험난한 여정을 소화하면서도 생생하고 높은 영상미를 표현해냈다는 평가를 받았다. 브루노 페데리코 기자는 남중미의 콜롬비아와 북중미의 파나마를 잇는 험난한 협곡지대인 다리엔갭(Darien Gap)를 거쳐 미국으로 이동하기 위해 전 세계에서 몰려든 이주자들의 험난하고 위험한 여정을 카메라에 담았다. 그의 취재영상은 2020년 8월 12일 미국의 공영방송 PBS의 시간에 <필사적인 여정: Desperate Journey>이라는 아이템으로 보도됐다. 이번에 특집부문의 첫 수상자로 선정 된 브루노 페데레코(Bruno Federico)는 이탈리아 출신으로 미국 PBS, 호주ABC방송에서 프리랜서 영상기자로 활동해 왔고, 2021 피버디상(2021 Peabody Award), 2021 국가헤드라이너상(National Headliner Award), 2017 미국 해외언론협회 로버트스피어스벤자민상(Overseas Press Club of America 2017, Robert Spiers Benjamin Award) 최우수상을 수상했다.
▲비경쟁부문의 공로상인 ‘오월광주상(MayGwangju Award)’ 수상자는 前 미국CBS서울지국 소속 故 유영길 영상기자이다.
유영길 영상기자는 1980년 5월19일 광주 금남로에 계엄군이 투입된 상황을 처음으로 취재하고, 보도하여 5.18 광주민주화운동을 최초로 TV뉴스로 알린 공로를 인정받아 수상자로 선정되었다. 심사위원회는 고인이 된 유영길 영상기자의 유족, 지인에 대한 인터뷰, 1980년 5월 19일 광주동구청 상황일지와 미국CBS-TV의 뉴스, 5·18 당시 외신의 보도와 국내외 학술자료를 조사하고 검증했다. 이를 통해, 유영길 기자가 5·18을 최초로 취재, 보도한 영상기자이고, 유 기자가 컬러로 기록한 1980년 5월 19일의 광주 금남로의 상황이 5.18 진상규명 작업과 광주민주화운동을 기억하는 중요한 역사자료의 가치가 있다는 점을 높이 평가했다. 심사위원회는 故유영길 기자에 대한 오월광주상 수상이 5·18 당시 영상기자를 비롯한 다양한 언론의 취재기록과 언론인들의 증언을 재조명하고, 체계화하는 시작점이 되기를 바란다는 데 의견을 함께 했다.
