계속되는 이스라엘의 가자지구 언론인 학살을 규탄한다!!

 2025년 8월 11일, 이스라엘군의 공격으로 가자지구에서 또 다시 5명의 언론인이 목숨을 잃었다. 알자지라방송 이브라힘 자헤르(Ibrahim Zaher) 영상기자와 아나스 알샤리프(Anas Al-Sharif) 기자를 포함한 5명의 언론인이 이스라엘군의 야만적이고 무자비한 공격으로 인해, 이스라엘이 벌이는 가자학살의 추악한 진실을 세상에 알려온 언론인들의 양심과 자유가 다시 한 번 비참하게 짓밟혔다. 이스라엘은 알샤리프 기자가 하마스 조직원이라는 검증되지 않은 주장을 반복하며 이번 공격을 정당화하려 했다. 그러나 이는 진실을 은폐하고, 가자지구의 참상을 전 세계에 알리는 언론인의 목소리를 침묵시키려는 비열한 시도에 불과하다. 

브라운대 왓슨국제공공정책연구소의 올해 4월 발표에 따르면 가자전쟁은 미국 남북전쟁이나 세계 1·2차대전, 한국전쟁, 베트남전쟁, 유고슬라비아전쟁, 9·11 이후 아프간전쟁을 통틀어 가장 많은 언론인이 사망한 전쟁으로 “언론인들에게 최악의 전쟁”이라고 지적했다. 또한, 언론인보호를 위한 국제단체인 ‘언론인보호위원회(CPJ)’의 최근 발표에 따르면, 가자 전쟁 발발 이후 영상기자, 기자, PD 등 팔레스타인인 언론인들의 사망자수는 270명에 이르고 있다. 

 가자의 언론인으로서 가자-이스라엘 전쟁의 한 가운데서, 이스라엘 공습의 참상을 세상에 알린 보도로 제4회 힌츠페터국제보도상 ‘기로에 선 세계상(대상)’과 ‘뉴스상’을 수상한 살라 알 하우(Salah Al Haw)영상기자와 유세프 함마쉬(Yousef Hammash)영상기자는, 작년, 시상식 참가를 위해 한국을 방문해 가자(Gaza)에서 벌어지고 있는 이스라엘군의 팔레스타인 언론인들에 대한 집요한 살해공격과 위협에 대해 고발한 바 있다. 당시, 두 영상기자의 고발을 직접 접한 한국의 언론인과 시민들은 이스라엘이 가자에서 언론인들을 향해 벌이고 있는 범죄행위가 목적하고 있는 것은 가자주민들에 대한 반인도주의적 공격과 살상행위를 세상에 알리지 못하게 하고, 축소시키려는 ‘목격자 없는 전쟁만들기’라고 규탄한 바 있다.   

 이에 역사의 현장을 기록하고 알리는 동료언론인으로서 한국의 영상기자들은 가자의 팔레스타인 언론인들의 죽음에 애도의 뜻을 표한다. 그리고, 이스라엘 정부의 반인도주의적인 언론탄압이자 전쟁범죄를 즉각 멈출 것을 촉구한다. 그리고, 이 모든 것의 원인이 된 ‘가자-이스라엘 전쟁’을 멈추고 평화와 화해의 시대로 나아가는 용단을 내릴 것을 요구한다. 

또한, 한국의 언론과 언론인들에게도 더 이상 ‘가자-이스라엘 전쟁’의 참상을 나와는 직접적 관계가 없는 ‘타인의 고통’을 전하는 뉴스로 다룰 것이 아니라, ‘일제식민지’와 ‘한국전쟁’을 경험했던 오랜 고통과 상처를 가진 역사를 되새겨, 반인도적인 이스라엘의 가자학살과 팔레스타인 언론인들에 대한 살해행위를 더욱 심층적이고 지속적으로 보도할 것을 촉구한다.

Condemning Israel’s Ongoing Massacre of Journalists in Gaza

On August 11, 2025, five more journalists lost their lives in Gaza as a result of attacks by Israeli forces. Among the dead were Al Jazeera cameraman Ibrahim Zaher and reporter Anas Al-Sharif. This brutal and merciless assault trampled once again on the conscience and freedom of journalists who had been bringing the world the grim truth of Israel’s massacre in Gaza. Israel attempted to justify the attack by repeating unverified claims that Al-Sharif was a member of Hamas. This is nothing more than a vile attempt to silence the voices of journalists revealing the reality in Gaza and to conceal the truth.

According to an April report by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the Gaza war has claimed the lives of more journalists than the American Civil War, both World Wars, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Yugoslav Wars, and the post 9/11 war in Afghanistan combined, making it “the deadliest war for journalists” in history. Furthermore, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recently reported that since the outbreak of the Gaza war, 270 Palestinian journalists including cameramen, reporters, and producers have been killed.

Salah Al Haw and Yousef Hammash, Palestinian cameramen from Gaza who won the Grand Prize “A World at the Crossroads Award” and the “News Award” at the 4th Hinzpeter International Press Awards for their frontline coverage of the Israeli bombardment, visited Korea last year for the ceremony. They testified to the persistent killing and intimidation of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces. Korean journalists and citizens who heard their testimony condemned Israel’s crimes against journalists in Gaza as part of a deliberate campaign to prevent the world from learning about its inhumane assaults and killings of Gaza’s residents, an effort to wage a “war without witnesses.”

As fellow journalists who record and report the events of history, Korea’s video journalists express their condolences for the deaths of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. We call on the Israeli government to immediately cease its inhumane suppression of the press and its war crimes. We also demand that the Gaza Israel war, the root cause of all this, be brought to an end, and that the parties take the bold step toward peace and reconciliation.

We also urge Korean media and journalists not to treat the tragedy of the Gaza Israel war as news about the distant suffering of others with no direct connection to themselves. Instead, they should reflect on Korea’s own history of long endured pain and wounds from the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, and report more deeply and consistently on Israel’s inhumane massacre in Gaza and its killing of Palestinian journalists.
